The Ambassador of Cuba in Ireland visits the University College of Cork.

Deputy President & Registrar’s Office at University College Cork, Professor Stephen Byrne and the Head of the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies of the University itself, Professor Nuala Finnegan, received the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland, Bernardo Guanche Hernandez.

During a fruitful meeting, they discussed the relations that exist between the University College of Cork and the University of Havana, in particular, between the aforementioned Department and the Institute of History of Cuba, as well as initiatives for their further development.

Likewise, with the presence of Professor Finnegan, co-author of the book “Ireland and Cuba. Entangled Stories”, was exchanged about the historical links between the two brother countries, which suffered from colonialism and have struggled to achieve and maintain their respective sovereignty and independence.

The Cuban diplomat exposed, grosso modo, the situation his country is going through, victim of a reinforced US blockade and the hostile policy of that country against Cuba.
