“We are very proud of Cuban women”

Teresa Amarelle Boué was ratified as general secretary of the Federation of Cuban Women.

“We are very proud of Cuban women,” expressed the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, yesterday, at the closing session of the 11th Congress of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC in Spanish).
“I feel politically satisfied, and happy for the work they have done in the past, in difficult times, and for the work they are doing today, in very difficult times as well, due to the aggressiveness of Yankee imperialism,” he emphasized. Emotionally, he said: “We give you all a kiss, on behalf of Vilma and also on my own behalf”.
In his closing remarks, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, called for breaking cultural barriers and patriarchal mental schemes, if society aspires to the highest degree of social justice possible.
Violence outrages us and summons us not to be impassive and to have zero tolerance against such behaviors, he said. The Federation must resemble its time, and continue to be a revolution within the Revolution.
That in the struggle for the defense of women’s rights it is necessary to understand the diversity of experiences and perspectives, to apply an intersectional approach for social prevention and to make a joint effort of governmental actors, were premises of the Congress, and mark the work in the new stage, for which the delegates ratified Teresa Amarelle Boué as general secretary of the organization.
The FMC received messages of admiration from the Vietnamese Women’s Union; the Lao Women’s Union; the Women’s Federation of China; the democratic women’s movements of Spain, Portugal and the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic; the Jordanian Women’s Association and the General Union of Palestinian Women.
The final session was attended by members of the Political Bureau Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power; Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz; Secretary of Organization of the Party Central Committee Roberto Morales Ojeda; and José Ramón Machado Ventura, Commander of the Rebel Army.
