Díaz-Canel receives Argentine Minister of Health

The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in meeting the challenges posed in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic

First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, on the morning of May 29, received Dr. Carla Vizzotti, Minister of Health of the Republic of Argentina.

Dr. Vizzotti, accompanied by Cecilia Nicolini, special advisor to the Argentine Presidency, made a working visit to our country, with a view toward strengthening bilateral cooperation in meeting the challenges posed in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the fraternal meeting, the two parties discussed the progress of Cuban candidate vaccines and medicines Cuba is developing to treat the disease. Also addressed was the potential for cooperation between Cuba and Argentina, as well as other nations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Cuban side was represented by Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz; Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health; Ana Teresita González Fraga, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment; as well as other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the pharmaceutical state enterprise group BioCubaFarma.

The Argentinean Minister of Health was also accompanied by Luis Alfredo Ilarregui, ambassador for the Argentine Republic in Cuba.

Cuba’s Minister of Public Health, Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, and his Argentine counterpart, Dr. Carla Vizzotti, signed a letter of intent, on May 28, to strengthen cooperative relations in the field of human health and biotechnology for the welfare of their peoples.

The document was signed at the headquarters of the Cuban regulatory authority, the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices, and reaffirms the willingness to collaborate on immunization of the populations in both countries with Cuban-developed vaccines against COVID-19, and in other Latin American and Caribbean nations, as well.
