Yasmary Rodriguez member of Cuba Solidarity Forum Ireland, Cuban citizen living in Ireland, speaks of the remarkable victories won by Cuban women.
I was glad during my time as a T.D. in Dáil Eireann that I had the opportunity along with Deputy Thomas Pringle, Convenor of the Irish-Cuban Parliamentary Friendship Group, to be a voice on Cuba, a voice for Cuba, asking parliamentary questions, hosting meetings with Cuban visitors, speaking at Cuban events also using my position as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee to keep Cuba on the agenda, especially in relation to The Cuban Five and the Sanctions.
There were some memorable moments for me – chairing the Liberty Hall event where Fernando Gonzalez of the Cuban Five was the speaker; also working with the Cuban Ambassadors Teresita, Hermes and Hugo and of course meeting President Diaz-Canal.
And most memorable were the visits to Cuba with my own friends and supporters.
All of which brings me to make the point of the need for more engagement between Ireland and Cuba – politically, economically, socially and culturally. I wish the new group well and hope it will contribute to that greater engagement, also a greater awareness in Ireland of Cuba.
I believe a priority has to be the Sanctions, to raise greater awareness of the illegality and immorality of the sanctions.
Maureen O’Sullivan.
The Cuban people’s determination to create a just and equal society, and a model of the New Human being that Che spoke of, has resulted in great achievements in Health and Education for the entire population of Cuba. They have in a spirit of true solidarity with the rest of the World generously shared their experience and Human resources. They have truly shown, despite brutal opposition, that “Another World is Possible”. I welcome and support the work of Cuba Solidarity Forum in strengthening the bonds of friendship between Cuba and Ireland, 2 Sovereign Island nations with so much in common.
Yours Sincerely,
Dr. David Hickey
